Out and About

by Andrea Murdock

Take a few minutes to go outside and find a rock to hold in your hand. It can be a small landscaping rock, a pebble from a creek bed, or even a broken piece of concrete from a curb. The shape and material of the rock doesn’t matter as much as having something to hold.

The Lord is my solid rock,

my fortress, my rescuer.

My God is my rock—

I take refuge in him!—

he’s my shield,

my salvation’s strength,

my place of safety.

Psalm 18:2:

Take a marker and list at least five things you want to pray for this week.

What is a new way you can find mental clarity this week, specifically in nature? Perhaps you could go to a park and wander a new path. Or, you could simply stretch out in the sun on a warm sidewalk like you did as a little kid. What is something you could do that would bring you joy in God’s creation? Spiritual comfort comes from knowing that our God is big enough to have created all outdoor masterpieces and yet personal enough to be present with each of us every day. Take your rock with you to remind you to pray while you’re outside.

Creator God, you brought all things into being and called that creation good. As a part of that creation, I thank you for giving me a mind, body, and spirit that can be renewed and refreshed when I take time in nature. Be with me this week and remind me to unplug and unwind so that I can address the needs of the world with focus, determination, and love just like Jesus did. Amen.”
