Every week you’ll find different types of posts here on the ABS blog. Today’s post is for teachers, to encourage conversation and reflection in your Bible study group. Each “Let’s Talk About” activity can be used at any time during your meeting and lasts approximately 15 minutes.
Today, let's talk about...
BEING HOLY PEOPLE
You are the Lord’s children. Don’t cut yourselves and don’t shave your foreheads for the dead, because you are a people holy to the Lord your God. You are the ones whom the Lord selected to be his own, to be a treasured people out of all other people on earth.
The cuttings and baldness mentioned in verse 1 were pagan acts of sacrifice practiced at the time. Moses was writing to remind the Israelites they were not to take part in these pagan acts. Moses wanted to remind them of their identity as God’s holy and chosen people and that they were treasured by the God Most High. If the people of God are treasured, it means we have tremendous value. We are meant to live out this holiness not only by following rules but also by loving others in the same way Jesus Christ does. The same God who treasured the Israelites in the Old Testament treasures us now. Therefore, we must treasure others in the same way God treasures us.
Questions to Discuss:
How does it make you feel to be treasured by the God Most High?
How does the way you view yourself affect the way you view others?
What do you treasure most in your life?
