Let's Talk About the Power to Serve
Luke 4:18-21
The Spirit of the Lord is upon me,
because the Lord has anointed me.
He has sent me to preach good news to the poor,
to proclaim release to the prisoners
and recovery of sight to the blind,
to liberate the oppressed,
and to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.
He rolled up the scroll, gave it back to the synagogue assistant, and sat down. Every eye in the synagogue was fixed on him. He began to explain to them, “Today, this scripture has been fulfilled just as you heard it.” —Luke 4:18-21
Commentary:
Jesus was in the synagogue reading from Isaiah about the Messiah who was anointed by God to serve in ministry to others. When he finished reading the passage, Jesus told those gathered that he was the fulfillment of that Scripture. The Holy Spirit empowered and sent Jesus to live in service to others in specific ways. The anointing and power given through the Holy Spirit is still necessary for believers to effectively serve others.
Questions to Discuss:
In what ways do you feel the presence of the Holy Spirit in your life?
How is the Holy Spirit leading you to serve?
Is it possible to effectively serve without the power of the Holy Spirit?
