Let's Talk About Living the Truth

by Rose Taylor

3 John 3-4

I was overjoyed when the brothers and sisters arrived and spoke highly of your faithfulness to the truth, shown by how you live according to the truth. I have no greater joy than this: to hear that my children are living according to the truth. —3 John 3-4

Commentary:

John refers to himself in this letter as “the elder” (verse 1) and addresses the letter to Gaius, who is very dear to him. John has spoken with some believers who had been with Gaius and observed his faithfulness to the truth. Those brothers and sisters were so inspired by the witness of Gaius’ life that they shared it with John and the church. John highly commends Gaius for showing that faithfulness by living according to the truth. The life of a Christian should be a witness to others of the truth of our faith and belief in Christ.

Questions to think about:

In what ways can we live according to the truth?

What observations could others make about your faithfulness to truth?

Do you believe the truth is the same for everyone? Why or why not?

How many people have inspired you by living faithfully in truth?
