Let's Talk About Legacy

by Paul Bonner

Every week you’ll find different types of posts here on the ABS blog. Today’s post is for teachers, to encourage conversation and reflection in your Bible study group. Each “Let’s Talk About” activity can be used at any time during your meeting and lasts approximately 10-15 minutes.

Today, let's talk about...

Matthew 26:6-13

By pouring this perfume over my body she’s prepared me to be buried. I tell you the truth that wherever in the whole world this good news is announced, what she’s done will also be told in memory of her.” —Matthew 26:12-13

The woman in this story is Mary, the sister of Martha and Lazarus, who lived in Bethany. Pouring the perfume on Jesus’ head was probably an act of hospitality or an allusion to the coronation ritual for a king. Most interesting is what Jesus said about her: Whenever this story is told throughout the world (and throughout history), she will be remembered. And here we are—today—talking about her.

Questions to discuss:

What is strange about this story?

What was Mary saying by performing this act for Jesus?
