Every week you’ll find different types of posts here on the ABS blog. Today’s post is for teachers, to encourage conversation and reflection in your Bible study group. Each “Let’s Talk About” activity can be used at any time during your meeting and lasts approximately 10-15 minutes.
Today, let's talk about...
A PREOCCUPIED MIND
While Jesus and his disciples were traveling, Jesus entered a village where a woman named Martha welcomed him as a guest. She had a sister named Mary, who sat at the Lord’s feet and listened to his message. By contrast, Martha was preoccupied with getting everything ready for their meal. So, Martha came to him and said, “Lord, don’t you care that my sister has left me to prepare the table all by myself? Tell her to help me.”
Martha was preoccupied with preparing a big meal for her guests. She was likely the older sister and responsible for showing hospitality (extremely important in Middle Eastern culture of the day). She was totally focused on the tasks at hand. Martha had become overwhelmed, which made her very irritated with Mary, whose total focus was on listening to Jesus.
Questions to Discuss:
Was Martha’s concern justified? Explain.
How do you react when overwhelmed by distractions?
Has someone close to you ever let you down? Explain.
