Let's Talk About Appreciating Guidance

by Rose Taylor

1 Samuel 3:12-13

On that day, I will bring to pass against Eli everything I said about his household—every last bit of it! I told him that I would punish his family forever because of the wrongdoing he knew about—how his sons were cursing God, but he wouldn’t stop them. —1 Samuel 3:12-13

Commentary:

Samuel, a youth who had been dedicated to God by his mother, was being raised in the temple by Eli the priest. Samuel would be called by God to be a prophet. One night, God called Samuel to give Eli a message, that God was angry with Eli. Eli’s sons had been doing horrible things, such as cursing God, but Eli did not correct them and guide them to do what was right. God wanted Eli to know that, because of his lack of fatherly correction and guidance, his family would experience terrible trouble.

Questions to Discuss:

When have you been unappreciative of someone’s guidance?

When have you been thankful for someone’s guidance?

What was the difference between the two situations?
