Let's Talk About a Small Gesture

by Brent Lamberth

Matthew 10:42

I assure you that everybody who gives even a cup of cold water to these little ones because they are my disciples will certainly be rewarded. —Matthew 10:42

Commentary:

God’s one commandment for the Christian disciple is to love others like God loves us. This is our collective calling and purpose. Still, answering that call is easier said than done. It’s tempting to think that, in moments of division, we are unable to fulfill our calling. We may even feel useless in pursuing our purpose. But in this Scripture, Jesus reminds us that even a small and seemingly insignificant gift can mean so much: a phone call to someone elderly, a handwritten note to a friend, delivery of meals, or running errands. These are some of the cups of cold water for which Jesus calls us to show our gratitude.

Questions to Discuss:

Where have you witnessed good news and gratitude in a world recently filled with bad news?

In what ways have you been generous and giving to your family, community, and world?
