Be Still

by Melissa Slocum

Be still, and know that I am God! I am exalted among the nations, I am exalted in the earth. —Psalm 46:10 (NRSV)

In our sped-up culture of constant tech connection, it can be difficult for some people to unplug and simply be still. Resting does not just mean sleeping. Taking time to rest and refresh looks different for different people.

Put away your phone for ten minutes and find a quiet place to relax. Close your eyes and imagine a beautiful place, a favorite spot where you like to go. Take a few deep breaths. Guide yourself through a meditation using the following questions. As you do this, relax your body and clear your mind of all else.

What do you like most about the place you are imagining?

How do you feel when you visit here?

What is God’s message to you in this moment about being still and resting?

How are you meant to carry that message forward throughout the day or week and to share it with others?

After you have spent several minutes in quiet meditation or prayer, open your eyes and reflect on how you feel.
